Darwin to Adelaide

Friday 24th July

Our week in Darwin is almost over and tomorrow morning we put ourselves and the car on The Ghan Train for the journey down to Adelaide. The train leaves Darwin at 9am Saturday and gets into Adelaide around 1pm on Monday. The distance to be covered is just over 3000kms and we have two four hour stops for side trips, one in Katherine on Saturday and one in Alice Springs on Sunday. From Adelaide we have about 1700 kms to home, so three overnight stops on the way in Pinnaroo SA, Narrendera NSW and Gunnedah NSW. We had a great time in Darwin, plenty to see and do and the weather was hot and apparently unusually humid for the time of year. Aviation buffs would have enjoyed themselves immensely as the RAAF and USAAF were conducting joint military exercises the entire week so the sky was alive with sounds of military hardware day and night. Here in Darwin they don’t mind since the Japs bombed them over 60+ times in WW2 during 1942/1943 and there are 160 million people a few miles north of them in Indonesia and just 22 million in all of Australia.

ODO reading from Clarenza = 5958.2 kms
